"Mushrooms, Fungi; as produced by the Midwifery of Autumnal Thunder-Storms, some hold neither root, herb, flower nor fruit, nor to be eaten crude and should be therefore banished entry in to our sallets." This is the edited version as his musings in the book go on for quite some time. Perhaps being from an era when choosing which fungi to eat could literally be the last decision you ever made made John a little vociferous on the subject...
